My reply to Greg’s post, "All Men are Created Equal".

I think that the Bugs Bunny/William Shakespeare comparison was such a small part of the whole, that to remove it and analyze it on it’s own, it’ll seem a lot more ridiculous than it did in context.
That picture was funny though. Haha.
If you think about it, Lakoff made her point with this example- and proved her point with this example. Bugs Bunny and William Shakespeare cannot be compared on certain levels because they are so different. It’s that difference that- through their combination- makes them seem so absurd. But both are parts of human culture, and both must be studied to understand human culture.
She may have been able to use another example, but why should she? It’s the fact that Bugs Bunny and Shakespeare DON’T add up that makes it a good example.
Not that I’m particularly impassioned about either… or really about defending Lakoff’s examples… This is more of a devil’s advocate thing. I don’t take that example as seriously as I may seem.
And I just couldn’t scroll down the posts without stopping to laugh at Shakespeare with bunny ears.
Greg’s example regarding the evolution of words and Thomas Jefferson was good. Here was this document proclaiming rights to all men, and freedom to all men. However, the people who- at the time- counted as "men" were limited, and not at all the same as it is today.
Greg should write a book and Advanced Composition students will be forced to read it. It’ll be amazing.
I never watched Ellen. But I have seen one episode of the talk show. There was this whole thing about Jacuzzi, and how they were mad that Ellen called a whirlpool a Jacuzzi. Then she called a man who was named ‘J. Cuzzi’ and left a message on his answering machine. I wish there had been a follow-up to that. Mr. Cuzzi coming home to find a message from Ellen DeGeneres…
